Bruce Almighty
Is your cup of joy half empty instead of half full? When you look at your job, your family and/or your love life, do you wonder where the zest went? Has your delight in life turned to sour grapes? It’s time for you to watch “Bruce Almighty.”
“Bruce Almighty” was released in May, 2003. Directed by Tom Shadyac, it was written by Steve Koren & Mark O’Keefe and Steve Oedekerk. “Bruce Almighty” starred Jim Carrey, Morgan Freeman, Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell, Catherine Bell, Lisa Ann Walter, Philip Baker Hall, Sally Kirkland, Nora Dunn, Eddie Jemison and Sally Kirkland.
Bruce Nolan, a Buffalo TV reporter, is unhappy with his job and his life. After being beaten up, he complains to God. Eventually, God gives Bruce his powers for a week.
Bruce tests his powers: he terrorizes gang members, improves his car and enlarges his girlfriend’s breasts, with humorous results. After dying in a street accident, Bruce gets a chance to reevaluate his life.
Jim Carrey shines as a disgruntled TV reporter temporarily granted God’s powers.
Carrey usually does well with his comedies. When he steps outside his “comfort zone,” with dramas like “The Majestic” and “The Number 23,” his fans tend to stay home.
Jennifer Aniston makes the most of her supporting role as Carrey’s girlfriend. Aniston developed a huge fan base while appearing on TV’s popular “Friends” series. She’s since made the jump to movies, with mixed results.
Morgan Freeman uses his calm presence and wonderful voice to good effect in the role of God. Steve Carell is a hoot as Carrey’s arch-rival at the TV station.
A key scene has Carrey/Bruce able to hear the prayers of those in need. There are so many, he is overwhelmed by the experience.
God has been seen, or heard, in a variety of movies over the years. “The Ten Commandments” and “Oh, God!” are two of the better ones.
Some people suggest we need to take the time to stop and smell the roses. Counting your blessings might be a more useful, and beneficial, activity.
“Bruce Almighty” is available on DVD. (PG-13)
